The Willibald Gebhardt Research Institute (www.wgi.de) is a non-governmental and non-profit institution which is officially registered at the Essen Court in Germany (No. VR 3466). The institute was founded in 1992 and celebrates its 20th anniversary in 2012. Today, more than 18 local, regional, German and European bodies build the wgi-board of trustees which represents mainly sport organizations (e.g. State Sport Confederation of North Rhine-Westphalia, West German Soccer and Athletics Association; European Non-Governmental Sport Association, European Fair Play Movement).
Since the year 2000 the WGI has been liaised with the University of Duisburg-Essen and has become a partner institute of the German Federal Institute of Sport Science (Bonn) as well as of the Institute of Sport Science and Human Movement Studies at the University of Duisburg-Essen (2010). The WGI is working together with many national and international partners on different levels to conduct studies in physical education and youth sports. Since October 2011 the WGI has been documented by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) as one of the 28 Olympic Study Centers world-wide with focus on Olympic education.
